How the calculator works

Each chore counts for its minutes per week. “Both” splits those minutes 50/50, “n/a” leaves the chore out.

Thinking work is counted the same way: planning, remembering and noticing take time even when nobody sees it. Sociologist Allison Daminger calls this the cognitive dimension of housework.

The defaults are rough estimates. Change them: 20 minutes of cooking in one home is 90 in another. This is a conversation starter, not a verdict.

Questions

Is a 50/50 split the goal?

Not always. If one of you works longer hours, a 60/40 split can feel fair to both. What matters is that you agree on the split and that it matches reality.

Why count mental load in minutes?

Because it takes time and attention, and it’s the part that usually goes unnoticed. Counting it in minutes puts it on the same scale as the visible chores.
